Cascade Mode for sites

Cascade Mode controls whether a site can inherit shared content from ancestor sites. Every site is either Open or Sealed. New sites default to Open.

Open vs Sealed

Open sites can show eligible content shared down from parent and other ancestor sites. Sealed sites keep only their own content. Supported shared content includes Documents, Risks, companies, and personnel records.

  • Open — the site can inherit shared Documents, Risks, companies, and personnel records from ancestors when those records are eligible to share.

  • Sealed — the site never shows ancestor content as inherited items. Only records owned by this site appear.

Cascade Mode sits on the site itself. Parent and child sites each have their own setting. A sealed child does not inherit, even if a parent is sharing content.

Set Cascade Mode

Change Cascade Mode from organisation site details when cascade is available for your organisation.

  1. Go to Settings > Organisation.

  2. Find the site and click Edit.

  3. In Site Details, set Cascade Mode to Open or Sealed.

  4. Click Save Changes.

You need the Admin role for the Site module to edit site details. The Cascade Mode field appears only when cascade is available for the organisation.

What Cascade Mode does not control

Cascade Mode only decides whether this site is willing to receive inherited content. It does not by itself publish or share parent content.

  • Parents still choose what is eligible to share through module defaults, category settings, or per-record Share with Child Sites controls.

  • Inherited content stays owned by the ancestor site and is read-only in the child site.

  • Role access still applies per site. Access on a child site does not automatically grant access on every other site.
