Asset Classes

Asset classes are the taxonomy categories that organize your equipment. They form a hierarchy from broad groups like Fire Equipment down to specific types like CO2 Fire Extinguisher. Asset models sit within these classes, and every individual asset instance is created from a model. A single model can belong to multiple classes, so you can classify the same equipment in different ways.

How Asset Classes, Models, and Instances Work Together

Asset classes are categories. Asset models are the specific equipment templates you create, such as Some Company's CO2 Extinguisher. Asset instances are the physical units you track, such as three individual extinguishers installed in different rooms.

  • Class = a taxonomy node for filtering and grouping

  • Model = a reusable template with manufacturer details, documents, and blocks

  • Instance = an individual unit with its own location, serial number, and warranty

How to Create an Asset Class

  1. Go to Premises > Asset Classes

  2. Click Create Class

  3. Enter a name (e.g. Fire Extinguisher or Fire Equipment)

  4. Optionally add a description

  5. Save the class

The class appears in the asset classes list. You can expand it to see child classes and linked models.

How to Create a Sub-Class

  1. Go to Premises > Asset Classes

  2. Find the parent class and click Create Sub-Class

  3. Enter a name (e.g. CO2 Fire Extinguisher under Fire Extinguisher)

  4. Save the sub-class

Sub-classes inherit the parent hierarchy. You can nest classes as deeply as you need for your organization.

For steps to link or unlink an asset model to a class, and to choose which class is primary, see Managing asset classes and linked definitions.

Industry Standard Codes

Asset classes support SFG20 and Uniclass codes so you can align your internal taxonomy with industry standards. For steps on adding, editing, and removing these codes, see Manage SFG20 and Uniclass codes for asset classes.

Common Questions

Can a model belong to multiple classes? Yes. A single asset model can be filed under several classes, so you can organize equipment by function, manufacturer, or location type.

Do classes affect asset instances? Instances are created from models, not directly from classes. Changing a model's class membership updates how it appears in class filters and lists, but does not change the instance records.

Can I delete a class? You can delete a class if it has no child classes and no linked models. Remove or reassign those first.
